Any idea what the open hatches are for?

Looks like that's where the hoses and such are stored. I've seen a similar setup before out in West Texas.

Hi Mark,

I love that photo, particularly for the odd combination of markings. Still, I once spent three days trying to figure out the "refueling" - only to determine that the photo was posed in the extreme. All the P-40-CU refueling positions were on the left wing root, not the right.

I went digging in my old flight records trying to remember where I saw that and I think the airport I remember that kind of setup being at is possibly Sonora, TX. I think that is where I used a similar fuel point based on this satellite view:

I used the underground refuel hose in Sonora in 2012 (Jet A) but last year it was sealed over and they had a hose reel on the tank,IIRC.

That's about when I used the 100LL there. Half a decade ago? Where has the time gone!
