FJ-4 Fury gear-up landing - Pilot OK

Fri Nov 15, 2019 12:54 am

This is from the Richfield Utah Police FB page;

On 11/14/19 at about 4:00 pm(MTN) 2 50’s era fighter jets flown into Richfield. An old MiG and an old Navy Fury. The pilot of the Fury failed to extend his gear and belly landed the plane. No one was injured. Fire crews are currently trying to remove the plane from the runway.

UPDATE: Crews were able to get the landing gear extended and the jet removed from the runway.

Oh no, poor old Rich. This is the second time this has happened to him. I hope for his sake it was a mechanical failure.

Wow! Glad he's okay! The thread title scared me. (maybe edit the thread title to add, "Pilot OK"?)

Damage to the jet doesn't look severe. Hopefully it will be easy to repair and the it will be back flying soon.

I was expecting the worst when I clicked this thread, glad the pilot is OK. Thread title change please?

Agree, "Fury belly lands", "Fury on belly" or "Furry lands gear up" would all be better thread titles. "Down" usually implies down hard, which is sometimes appropriate, but not in this case.

“Aircraft down” means loss of aircraft and possibly life. It’s never good. “Wheels Up Landing” would’ve been most accurate. It wasn’t a crash, just a case of a septuagenarian forgetting to lower the gear. Same thing happened with POF’s F-86A.

When was this? Over 35 years ago?

From the article on KSL.com, “ pilot hit his planes flaps instead of his landing gear”. Not sure of that means he lowered the flaps instead of gear, or the plane came to rest on its flaps and not his gear.

Gotta love modern reporting standards.

It may be fine to a mildly interested fan but if you have a personal connection to the pilot, owner, aircraft, or all of the above...it can make your heart skip a beat. Reading "aircraft down" or "plane crash" are an immediate foreboding prologue. "Belly landing" offers an assurance of low risk before your next "click". If you don't care how personal friends, family, etc. receive devastating news, then by all means blunder on... :wink: I wouldn't wanna be your Mom if Dad has a bad day and you're the reporter... :shock:
