Anyone notice on page 13 the photo showing the underside of the EAA B-17 that the "star and bar" insignia is misplaced on the bottom of the right wing?

It should be centered in the chord, on this one it's close to the aileron.

You sure? On the B-17 I think they included the aileron when calculating the position instead of centering it on the available space minus the aileron.

That's right. Actually the rule for all US types was to center the star 1/8-span inboard of the tip and at the center of the chord including any moving surfaces, but it was adjusted forward as necessary not to paint any part of it on the moving surface (and perhaps with a few inches of clearance). Thus the insignia on many familiar types like the P-40 and P-51 was displaced considerably forward of its nominally correct position. The B-17 was one type in which the combination of narrow aileron chord and relatively small size of insignia selected, made it possible to locate the insignia at its correct position without adjustment. It looks odd to us for that reason and also because the practice of Britain and most other countries was to center the insignia chordwise on only the fixed portion of the wing, so we're used to seeing that.

It’s totally wrong.

It looks wrong because it is the incorrect size, and the painter compounded the error by painting it in the wrong place.

It’s different than other planes, but uniquely B-17 which is cool....however, the Squadron marking on the right wing could be anywhere.....

OK yes, that's too small, and looks like it might be incorrectly proportioned as well.

I couldn't see it going any other way than it did. As we've seen before, the judging criteria isn't setup to automatically award the most original or authentically.

In all, we registered 20 Mustangs - 22 if you count the XP-82 I believe there were a few that took part in Heritage flights that never displayed in Area 51, so we didn't capture them in the count.

I just don't understand why the H doesn't get more love...it's such a hotrod! My son and I even overheard one of the 'Warbirds in Review' interviewees say something to the effect that the H just doesn't look right...Wha'???

So the both of us nodded heads in silent approval to Steve Couches' response to the insult: While the remaining Mustangs departed 18 like old women shuffling off to market, he hauled the H off the runway in half the distance and climbed into the wild blue Bearcat-style. That's not 'showing off'. That's called 'setting the record straight'.

It was Steve’s son Nick Coutches who was flying the P-51H (grandson of Mike Coutches). Nick also flies for the Collings Foundation.

Including the EAA’s Mustangs, and the Heritage Flight Mustangs (not displayed on the ground), there were 27 that were at Oshkosh, in one form or another, different days of the week.
