The former Bakalar Air Force Base in Columbus, Indiana is getting a C-119 Boxcar for static display. Looking forward to seeing it next year!

Good news, glad it found a home.
I wonder if they will change the USMC (or RCAF?) nose to the USAF-style?

I thought I'd heard of most '50s USAF bases, but Bakalar is a new one to me.

I did not recognize the name Bakalar name either, had to look it up. The mid-west is littered with fields like this.

Base was named Atterbury during WWII, first as a C-46/C-47 training base, then for B-25 & 26. Renamed Bakalar in 1954. Closed 1970.

I do hope a few more airframes make it out of Greybull, especially my favorites the P2V's and the KC-97's. One of the KC-97s was getting close to flight a few decades ago. The two C-82's there are pretty rare, but they are pretty torn apart, and likely of limited interest.

They have a nice little museum at Bakalar (which is now the Columbus Municipal Airport), an F-4 Phantom (static), and a good restaurant. A little more information and pictures here: http://www.atterburybakalarairmuseum.or ... story.html

John B. according to part of the article, they plan to restore the Boxcar as one that would have been based at Columbus.
