I'm surprised no one has thought of this...
If it was a test aircraft all its life...
the E might have stood for "Exempt" a mission prefix from 1946-55 for test aircraft meaning they were exempt from various maintenance, and combat related modifications, often because they were bailed to a contractor.
Considering its age (purchased in FY 49), it's something worth considering.

It does indeed. Post-1955 replaced with J- and N- if memory serves.

That is a refueling boom that came along with it on the same truck.

Thank you so much for the picture of that spectacular bird! I haven’t seen this plane before, and the static restoration is beautiful. I love the T-33 front, the F-94 back, and the P-80 tip tanks! The underslungs are so cool! With very few of the displayed P-80/TO-1 aircraft remaining having them they are rather special today. Thanks again!
