Harry Doan Aution on Oct 30 1992

Thu May 19, 2016 3:10 pm

I just found out that Harry Doan owned some of the Navy Trike style APU that were sold at auction on Oct 30,1992.
Does anyone know if that is true?
Does anyone know who handled the auction? Name of the auction company?
Anyone have a copy of auction listing?
Was there an auction bill with pictures?
I am trying to find out all I can about the strange little machines before they are lost in history.

Hi Tom,
I double checked with Roy Stafford today. He was one of Harry's best friends, and he doesn't remember Harry ever having any three-wheel APU's. It doesn't mean he didn't, but Roy was at his shop a lot and at the auctions and doesn't recall them at all. He did have some other APU's, but they weren't Jeep based units.

Here's some info on his auction including names and some aircraft history. Good info on the various aircraft he owned. If he had a "little black book" on the aircraft wrecks he found in Florida...that would be a neat item to have. There might be some leads to follow on what was in the auction. I grew up about a mile from his South Daytona place.

(The comment from the Smithsonan rep is funny given what history is today)

Starman was the Auction Company. They are still around and may still have a copy of the catalog in their archives-

I worked for Harry from 1988-1991. Harry did have one Jeep three wheel "Aircraft Carrier" Apu. I know that we got it running when I worked there. I drove it (weird ride) in front of the hanger in fact. I had finished at Embry-riddle and moved away before he was killed so I don't know if it was included in the auction. O would expect that it was.

Thanks Crane! I had been to Harry's several times in the late 80's Early 90's and didn't see one. Of course, I wasn't looking for one then! :)
I wonder where it went?

Wonder if his widow or children are still alive? Would they remember? Also. Dr Bill Harrison of Oklahoma attended and might remember. He went down there to buy the Martin AM-1 Mauler project but became discouraged at the fact it was cut into many pieces.

Last I heard Teresa (I think) was still alive, but it's been several years since I've been to Daytona Beach. You could check for ownership of Dirty Harry's Bar and see if she is still listed. Also, John Harrell was Lead Mechanic at the time. He may still be alive and in Daytona Beach also. Good luck.

There was a guy in Tracy City, Tennessee that had everything. His name was Sam Werner and he had about 15 acres of truckloads of military surplus stuff. They would bid on a huge lot just to get the bulldozers, trucks or whatever, and then haul everything else back. He's probably passed on but his kids are still up there on the mountain. I was up there about 20 years ago and Mr. Werner had turnded 70 and his son was trying to start liquidating the mess. The had an endless supply of M422 Mighty Mites, and more common jeeps , trucks, engines, etc. They had very stuff as well. Factory built jeep fire trucks, a Chevy jeep, a six wheel jeep designed as a WW II aircraft tug, LVT "alligators" , lots of stuff covered with vines and trees.
I haven't been up there in 20 years. A lot of the stuff went to a collector in Chilicotthe, Ohio. The long time jeep restorers would know where to find one.

Thanks to all of you for your ideas.I talked with John Harrell last night he said that Harry Doan Did have an APU but does not know were it went.I also tried to call Harry's wife but no answer.

Sam Werner of Tracy City TN stuff is The Werner Military Museum and the stuff that is not in the museum does not contain an APU according to the Historian of the museum.

This cold case it not closed any other ideas will be welcomed.
