The Yak 3UM that raced at Reno last year was involved in a serious prang at Wanaka yesterday when it hit a photographer's stand while landing. Tore half the right wing off. Pilot OK apart from hurt pride!

It isn't the same Yak that raced at Reno and the accident was this morning (Sat). The racer is also attending Wanaka however still wearing its race '35' decals.
Yak ZK-YYY hit a cherry picker, placed as part of a line holding cables for a precision landing competition between the grass and sealed runways. Obviously the Yak landing wasn't precise enough

Is the grass strip ever an active runway? I can understand if it is, if not that's almost like landing on a taxiway... Sucks to see, glad he got out safely.

I've seen several mentions of this "holding a wire for a precision landing competition."

I want to know what in the world would a wire have to do with precision landing. Seems to me that any wire (ground or aerial) would be a "man made obstacle" that would be a major no-no for any certifying agency, be that the insurance company or the applicable airworthiness agency (the CAA in this case).

Also, as for using the grass, I've seen several mentions that it had been used by several other aircraft that day, so was the Yak the biggest to use it, or did he just drift off centerline and that's what put him in peril?

The press release stated the cherry picker on the runway, not adjacent to it. There's also a comment on FB saying the pilot had mentioned on the radio that his left gear may not have been locked down so he was taking the grass... No confirmation of the gear issue yet though.
