RCAF Bristol "Sabre" Freighter ...

Sat Nov 25, 2017 2:33 pm

Below a nice set of photos showing an RCAF Bristol Type 170 Freighter hauling a Canadair CL-13 Sabre. The Royal Canadian Air Force used five Freighters to carry spares and supplies between the United Kingdom and their bases in France and West Germany. I'm no expert on RCAF history but I'll guess this was either a 421 0r 422 sq. Sabre being shipped sometime in late 1953.

Lovely shots Mark. This is Sabre 2 s/n 19215: it was with 416 Sqn RCAF at Gros Tenquin, France and on 6 November 1952 suffered Cat B damage when it landed in a strong crosswind at GT with excessive speed and swung off the runway. The nosewheel collapsed and the aircraft was air freighted for repair with 314 Technical Service Unit at RAF Langar, UK on 13 November.

It returned to 1 Air Division on 18 June 1953 and served with 430 Sqn for a year or so before going to the Turkish AF in June 1954. 19215 was written off on 1 April 1959 when it dived into the ground 30 miles east of Eskisehir AB.
