There has not been a lot of news regarding HBO's "The Mighty Eighth" series. Doing a search, I came across the 2 stories below saying that the series may not be on the air until some time in 2019.

The original article speculates that it could be on screens in early 2017, but that seems far too optimistic to me. Reportedly, Band of Brothers and The Pacific both took 10 months to film and they hadn't started filming this as of a few months ago. They won't finish even filming until early 2017 at this rate. Then, there's all of the post-production. The Pacific was in post-production for nearly two full years (finished filming May 2008 and aired March 2010), so we might be looking at early 2019 here. In other words, it might be a while.

(Found about midway through story)
Marson expects The Mighty Eighth to be on our screens in 2019. They are working hard now to be prepared to capitalize on the interest that the series will generate.

Are any real aircraft even being used for the making of this series with such a large budget?

Nothing about the aircraft seems to have been released yet.
Given the number of flying B-27s, I'd think they'd use some for ground shots if nothing else.
