Yak-3 & P-51 Ops Costs

Sun Jan 01, 2017 12:34 am

Hey gang,

I was wondering if any of y'all happened to have an excel/spreadsheet available with (rough) annual operating costs for a Yak-3 and/or P-51? Also, what about the R-1830? Any annual figures on one of those? Thanks!

Its one of those times where "If you have to ask...."

Connie Edwards was once asked why he stopped flying his P-51. He said it was because "flying the p-51 is the equivalent of driving a semi-tractor down to the corner store to pick up a pack of suds."

Collings books a full hour on the P-51 at $3200, and there isn't a whole lot of margin there, so that's a good ballpark figure to use. $3200 x (annual hours flown) = annual operating budget. From what I hear the T-28 burns nearly as much cash per hour as a mustang, even though acquisition costs are significantly less.

T-6 cost of fuel for 1 hour x 5 = is a wag.
