Historic C-46 heading for Israel...

I will be more than happy if one of the following C-46 is the one which will be brought to Israel,Or shell I write BROUGHT BACK,Because these two are the last survivors of the IAF Air Transport Group's C-46 fleet of 1948 ( I am not sure about their current condition):

MSN 26805 USAAF 42-3672 Last operator LAO COLOMBIA as HK791
MSN 261 USAAF 43-47190 Last operator AMSA as HI-495SP.

I'd guess the answer to 'Haiti' is 'neither'!

Location and photographer, are unknown to me.

As for the Argentinean C-46, there was one abandoned for a long time at the Santiago del Estero airport; I don't know whether this could be the airplane going to Israel? It was reported that it was going to be restored back to flying status, if I remember correctly.

Tulio, its not registration HI-495SP,

The plane is actually coming out of Alaska, not Argentina as previously reported. It is currently disassembled, crated and is in transit through the port of Seattle with expectation to arrive in Israel in about 2 months time.

Everts confirmed to me yesterday that it is registration N23AC (SN# 22451)

Any guesses as to the ID of this C-46? "Scrapyard in Argentina" might narrow it down.

The IAF does acknowledge their mistake with not keeping even one of the B-17s. They've tried to obtain one for their collection, but there just aren't enough B-17s to go around.

Have they tried to get one of the USAF's outdoor displays? Made an offer on Lacey Lady? The one in storage in Brazil? Any of the ones in England or France? They did try to get the E model that went to Paul Allen, but that fell through as well. Money talks...

I haven't seen it mentioned on here yet, but it would appear that they are set to receive the Greeley bar B-17. I saw a quick mention of this on Facebook. I am not sure if they are going to receive the forward fuselage only, or if there are other parts involved.

Which is the "Greeley bar B-17"?

That was 44-83387, the former 20th Century-Fox studio prop used for the cockpit shots in Twelve O'Clock High (movie and TV series), The 1000 Plane Raid, and Tora! Tora! Tora!. It's one of the two survivors (IIRC, 42-3324 being the other) that have the small auxiliary windows in the windscreen.



Around 1978 it was bought from Fox and hung as a display in a bar in Greeley, CO.

If you go the the Aerovintage page, go to the B-17 pages and in the news, go to 2013 and in the June addition, you will see a few pictures of this aircraft undergoing restoration.
