I think it's pretty cool that Steve Hinton wears a helmet that closely matches the looks of a WW 2 style leather one. It really adds to the authenticity of the flight demonstration as they taxi out and in again.

I agree fully. You see a lot of the fake leather helmets in the UK as well.
I get that it's 'cool' looking (and feeling) to wear a HGU-55 or other modern jet jockey bone dome as I've even done it myself, but nothing looks better than a leather helmet on the outside.
