Photos of WWII types...post 1947

Mon May 30, 2016 7:25 pm

I can't think of a better place to ask this question...

The other day I noticed in one of my books a post 1947 photo of an L-4 (I.e. one with "stars and bars").

I'd like to see more shots of that we think of as primarily WWII aircraft (not the usually seen T-6/C-47/C-45/F6F etc that saw widespread post-war use) in military service post war.

So how about it...does anyone here have any shots of A-20s, UC-78s, SBDs, P-61s, and (especially) CG-4/15s used by ARS in the early 50s...etc?

Thanks...

Nice request John. I think I have a few that may be close to your question and a few others that are just plain pretty photos. I'll post what know about them.

Neat photos, Mark. That C-46/Waco shot is odd. That glider is awfully close to the tow plane -- anybody have any idea why? And what would that radome looking thing on the glider be?

Still not exactly what John's looking for but their still nice to look at ... I know I have an SBD and PBY in my files somewhere that would fit the bill. See if I can find them.

Heater.
Judging by the relative sizes in this photo, it looks like the glider is left of the C-46s centerline.

I noted that too: radome on a glider sounds novel but possible...

Attached is a photo supplied to me by W.T. (Bill) Larkins a couple of years ago. The photo was taken by him in 1949 at Las Vegas Army Air Field (aka Nellis AFB). Note the one Utah ANG A/C still with a wrap-around OD WWII era paint scheme.

It is not. Look at the other photos of the glider. why would a glider need a radome?

I stand corrected.... No idea why it would have that

Trust me guys, it's a heater.
Remember, a glider doesn't have engines so there is no engine bleed heat.
And gliders were used for ARS work in the Arctic...in the days before useful helicopters.

Having said that, great photo of the Kingfisher, I've never seen a post-war example.

JohnB

I made the same observation about the post WWII OS2U w/ wrap around O/A dark blue paint scheme. Parked on the other side of the Kingfisher I originally spotted a F6F but on closer examination it "appears" to be a Wildcat fighter.

What's your take ??
