Eddie Fisher and his P-51s at Fairfax Airport, Kansas City.

Eddie Fisher, who operated out of Fairfax Airport in Kansas City owned a pair of P-51D Mustangs in the late 60s. Both of which became racers, N6321T became Ken Burnstine's "Foxy Lady" and later John Crocker's "Sumthin Else". The other 51 was N5483V which became the first "Precious Metal", owned by Gary Levitz and later Don Whittington.

Are there anyone here at WIX who spent time around Fairfax Airport between 1963-74 and remembers Fisher and his pair of Mustangs? I am kinda interested in the early history of N5483V.

I first heard of them from my dad. I'll ask him tomorrow. I believe someone also had a P-38 at Fairfax around that time.

Every now and then, I would sneak across the Missouri/Kansas border, and hang out at Fairfax. I remember two Mustangs in a very cramped low roofed hangar that most of the time the doors were open. I was about 15 or 16 at the time, so the year would have been 1970/71. The guys working there didn't care if I climbed in the cockpit, just got the usual "don't touch anything, kid" reply from them. After a while, they learned to ignore me. Fisher had a larger hangar that held a number od P-51 canopies that were lined on shelves on one of the walls. There were also 10 or more large crates sitting outside the hangar that contained Allison V-12 engines....there were little round glass windows on the sides of the crates that one could barely see the engines in them. I am assuming that they were Allisons, as that was what the stenciling said on the crates. Yes, there was a P-38 that was in a small metal hangar/shed on the east side of the field, right across from where the FAA hangared two red and white DC-3's. I only saw the P-38 once, and it had the camera nose on it. Zantop used to always land their DC-6 on three engines...bad maint. or S.O.P. .... don't know. I also remember Bill Dempsey's C-54 tanker being parked there at Fairfax from time to time. I soloed a C-152 there in early 80's ... It was a shame they closed the field down to build Saturns...The old art-deco terminal building was torn down as well, even though it was in great condition...We used to take our dates to the submarine races on the Missouri River levy at the end of the runway...Ah...memories!

I remember the guy that first took me up in a Champ said he could buy a complete Mustang in a crate from them for $7k.

I recall natural aluminum finish, and maybe a stripe along the sides of one....nothing special in the way of markings

There's a photo of N6321T and an unidentifiable mustang with what appears to be the name "Maggie" on its nose over at Freeman's Abandoned Airfield site.

TJ, I will have to go home and scour through the files this weekend, but I KNOW I have a black and white photo of N5483V when Eddie owned it. It appears to be white (could be natural metal, but I'm pretty sure it's white) with red stripes and lettering on it. And as Craig59 pointed out. "Maggie" is written on the nose. If I can find it I'll scan it and post it.
