Anything cool at Chino these days?

Thu Jan 28, 2016 11:53 am

I might get a chance to drop in at Chino next week. Any of our regular visitors there know of anything new, cool and unusual hanging around there these days? Anything unusual at Fighter Rebuilders for maintenance? Yanks finished their Helldiver yet? Lewis A-20 has departed I assume?

Rod Lewis' Connie just flew in there for restoration.

Rod Lewis' A-20 left Chino a few weeks ago now. As mentioned, his Constellation is now at Chino too. I think 'Voodoo' is also lodging with Planes of Fame at the moment.

August - I believe I have read somewhere that Steve's Fighter Rebuilders are finishing up a nice F-86 Sabre for Rod Lewis...

If I am not mistaken, they now have another A-20 at AeroTrader, if you can believe that:

Just posted to trade-a-plane recently, but does not specifically mention if this airframe is presently on site. Worth asking about, though!

Edit: Looks like the plane itself is currently in NY, so no luck... Sorry.

August,

Not much new that I've seen other than the Connie. Who knows what will come out of the woodwork around airshow time though.

Yanks new Hellcat is making some progress at least. Their P-40 has had the engine removed for overhaul for about a year.

I'll be there on Sunday if you are around then.

Thanks Brandon. I'll be sure to stop by Yanks as well as POF. I'll be gone by Sunday. Probably will go to catch the P-38 demo Saturday, may pop in Thursday too if bored.

Was there last week, and saw folks working on the PoF Zero & the aforementioned F-86. Nobody was working on
the Buchon (at least when I was there). The other D model Mustang (not Wee Willey) had the prop + cowling
removed, but nobody was working on it. Voodoo was there, but I understand she left not long after we were
there (we were there last Friday).

109, (Diemert) Val and P-59 seem to be making very little progress in the last few years from what I've seen.

They had nice weather for the P-38 event and got a good crowd. The bird looked and sounded good (of course). I enjoyed Mormillo's slide show.

Spam Can (the P-51 snj-5 mentioned) was being put back together when I was there. Probably all buttoned up by now.

The AT-12 (P-35) was pulled out and there was talk of re-covering the ailerons and elevators. Prep for the May show I assumed.

I haven't tracked the Buchon progress regularly but it looked pretty good, all together and primed but with no engine or cowl.

The Sabre FR is rebuilding was so shiny it hurt my eyes. Anyone know the serial of it?

The poor An-2 is now officially a derelict, shoved out onto the GA ramp. Fabric in tatters, landing gear wrecked. I still recall seeing that fly in POF shows in the 90s. :(

I don't think that POF owns the AN-2 any longer, though it still may be registered to them.
