RAAF Neptunes in the Vietnam War

Tue Oct 27, 2015 10:32 pm

It is said that RAAF SP-2H Neptunes provided limited AEW support to B-52s operating out of U-Tapao, Thailand in 1967.

What is known is that 4 Neptunes from No. 10 Squadron RAAF deployed to Sangley Point, Philippines in July 1967 to participate in SEATO Exercise "Sea Dog". After the exercise, the aircraft deployed to U-Tapao, the first time that the Squadron had operated out of a Thai base. The aircraft returned to their base at Townsville on 2 August 1967 so clearly any AEW sorties in conjunction with B-52s would have been limited to a matter of days. Can anyone elaborate on this?

RAAF P-2's also acted as airborne escorts for many trips to Vietnam by ex- carrier, then troop transport, HMAS Sydney [The Vung Tau Ferry] and other ships. Ops based at Sangley Pt RP.
