CAF's Nose Art Collection on display at EAA Musueum...

Fri Oct 23, 2015 9:41 am

The CAF's Nose Art Panel Collection is now on display at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh. They are expected to be there for a year or two.
Best Part- They are hanging from the hangar ceiling and photography is NOT prohibited...

Why is "photography is NOT prohibited" the best part? Or am I slow today & you're being sarcastic?

AFAIK, the photography rules for the nose art are no different at EAA than at Midland - You can't use flash. I have pictures in my personal collection of several panels, but due to the poor lighting they're not of "publishable" quality, even for the internet. As these panels are all original, use of flash will accelerate deterioration of the paint.

Are these actual paintings or photos? Just wondering if there would be any possibility of them having our C-47's nose art.

These are actual pieces of the aircraft. The nose art that you see is the real deal. When I was in Midland a few years ago, there was no photography allowed. It had nothing to do with preservation. The sign posted said they were copyrighted.

Over a million to restore them + X million to build the "Special Facility" to house them in a protected environment, how much did the EAA spend to "temporarily" house them, and who paid for the shipping North, and back South? (If they ever return to Midland, and that is a big if.

I wonder how the CAF could consider nose art "Copyrighted" since they were removed from aircraft paid for with taxpayer money?

I have pictures of them from Harlingen when they were put in the Bomber hanger. I guess they didn't realize the value of them back then.

Strictly speaking the copyright would reside with the original artist, no matter what it was painted on. Those individual rights could be assigned to another person or may have been void by being painted on the government owned airplane in the first place due to pre-existing contract (I think there may have been a copyright clause in my enlistment papers, I know there was in my TWA employment)

Like MUSTANGDRIVER, I was in Midland during the no photography era....

CAF can't claim copyright on them for a whole slew of reasons (I don't want to get into that here), but since they belong to the CAF they can control ACCESS and make the rules. If no photos is a rule, then thats how it works (like you may not want me taking pictures inside your house)...

HOWEVER when it gets to EAA, they can get the EAA to enforce the no photos rule if they want. If the EAA wants to have a DOCENT there saying no photos and yelling at people (VERY out of character for the EAA) they can do that too.

No problem with them not allowing photos. That's certainly within their right. Just the copyrighted excuse given seems a bit ridiculous.

Maybe they're trademarked instead? That, you can do for sure (just look at the Virginia Museum of transport did for their N&W 611 locomotive, they trademarked everything about that class of locomotives, even though they had nothing to do with the design or building of them).
A friend of mine is a copyright attorney, and I'll be asking if the CAF can copyright these panels. Copyright law is something that everyone thinks they know but so few people really do know how it works, I've found out over the years...

My question is WTH was the big hurry to get the nose art collection out of Midland? It was on display within a CAF facility. I just don't understand why the CAF needed to send the nose art to EAA in the first place.
