Always appreciate the help. Can you turn me on to your books? When you see so many variations of paint schemes, it's hard to say what's correct so I just do what the owner wants and since we found examples like this, off we go.

Trying to get good colour shots of the interiors are difficult, but the period photos I've uploaded show that the dark colour SEEMS to have been in widespread use. However it's a dark area at the best of times! Conversely I can't see evidence of lighter colours until later in service (late '50s on): silver-painted or light gray then seems to have been most commonplace.

Corsair Div: Corsair aileron hinges, how many parts could there be??? Received paint top coat, fasteners, etc. so when the paint is dry, they all get reassembled and sent to "Woody" to be ready for his magic on the fit. Marc forgot more about wood than most people even know. His great talent and the magic of modern technology will make him the King of Corsair ailerons, you just watch. He does the Howard wings and ailerons now which are very similar. Lime green is primer, green (looks yellow to me...) is the top coat. More to come.

Only way I can keep all those parts under control in my little brain.

With dissimmilar materials (steel hammer and rubber anvil) the aluminum will actually shrink which is what is needed in this case to bring the aluminum dents back to the original surface. Sounds weird, I know but it actually works, as you can see.

I visited Scott this morning and quizzed him on this method of dent repair for some time. He very kindly showed me exactly how he approaches such work - in this case, a rubber sheet over a PVC block, and a very fine detail hammer (1/4" radius ends, roughly) to actually shrink the metal back (it's so easy to stretch metal and bulge it out beyond what is desired - but 'shrinking' it back to size is something I regard as black magic). He recommended checking some of Ron Covell's videos, which I did, but I'd rather see Scott show how he actually accomplishes such work (this is a giant hint/suggestion that he needs to start a Youtube channel or something equivalent).

I may be a bit forthright is saying so, but if anyone fascinated by this thread finds themselves in southeastern Wisconsin, visiting Scott's hangar is must. I feel conflicted every time I drop by - I love learning bits and pieces of his vast metalworking knowledge, but hate stealing precious time away from his attention to projects. Very fortunately, Scott is overly generous with his time and expertise and kindly shares his wisdom - truly, a scholar and a gentleman.

Corsair Div.: Lots of painting to be done this week but you can't finish bits without the final coat of paint. At least that means we are checking the "Done" boxes. This week will have all the aileron hardware ready for Marc so as not to hold up any progress on the new ailerons.





Sabre Div: Same thing, paint must happen before the final assembly can be done. As of today, speed brake systems are all ready to be reassembled complete. Check that box.. Vert is at the paint shop today.

Told you I have some serious painting to get caught up on. Did four colors today with my surgical air brush and small paint gun. Corsair primer green, F86 radome black, F86 gear door yellow, F86 gear door silver... The only tough paint to work with is the Imron yellow as no reducer to thin it out called for. Ton more Corsair stuff ready for paint. Gonna be a busy week. Another F86 gear door to do in house. Corsair finish yellow to apply...yadda yadda yadda

Today time was spent assembling the refurbished aileron hinges. They were in bad shape as received. Now all fresh and inspected with all new fasteners and nut plates. Whole lot of parts for three hinges per side.

My buddy Arnie made up some needed aluminum washers for the hinge bits. These were Chance Vought sourced parts with a proper drawing. So simple, right? So many parts for simple things.



The large aluminum washer sandwiches wood ribs to the aluminum retainer.


Needed outboard hinge pieces now complete after trimming, drilling and dimping the cover. Next heat treat, paint and done.


Ran out of time to mix another batch of primer.

Getting closer to reassembly stage. Man this plane has lot of parts...Heat treating Monday to finish the aileron hinges, then they are checked "done".

Went to Tab Air today to heat treat the new aileron hinge bits. Then little adjustment was required. Primed and tomorrow top coat with color. Then assemble with new hardware and nut plates. DONE! I do like moving things to the "Done" section.
