Warbird Information Exchange

In all the years of reading and talking about her original build, I have heard a number of stories backed up with a number of reasons as to why they were supposed to be right. I have been trying to collect contacts and information for the website, and at the same time hopefully a book somewhere down the road. It would be nice to set the record straight once and for all for this interesting and amazing aircraft- and give credit to all those who have played a part in her along the way. The questions don't come up too often within the team, because we are always looking forward in regards to her. I always just over-joyed when anybody is interested in her, or air racing.

Pinia Olivas built the tail cone from parts that Tyrone Elias had made (P-51D). Bill Rogers built the vertical stabilizer (P-51H), and I built the rudder (P-51H). I believe the horizontal stabilizer (P-51D) came from Austrailia.

The original P-51H vertical stabilizer and rudder were used as "patterns" to make the new parts and are still in existance.

I think some of us have missed the key point while discussing the supposed "ruining" of the aircraft as a piece of history....
Both sides have valid points about history as a racer and a warbird, but the real point is whatever is done, the owner is the only person whose opinion is important. Each airplane, especially ones like this one, represents someone's dream. It doesn't matter what it is...house, boat, car or plane....The dream is what's important.
Granted, I might have mixed feelings if the aircraft was the only one of it kind left......but it is still the owners to do with what they will.
I hope they can repair PM and get back to living their dream soon.

Can someone create a "Rule #3" posting we can refer back to that says, "It is the owner's stuff and thier decision what to do with it, how it is painted, etc."?

It seems we have this argument about once or twice a month and it would save a lot of time.

I'm on forums for other preservation types, and this is a common thing there, too. You're never going to get away from that.
I daresay that it's probably more common among railroad enthusiasts...

Just don't leave out Rule #4, we are all allowed to express our opinion about what the owner has done with the plane he/she/it can do whatever he likes with. Or, just close the forum.

While I support the ability to give your opinion, I find the tone (explicit) used by some on here and elsewhere to be very demoralizing and/or argumentative. You are not the authority, you are not the owner, thus while you're entitled to your opinion, you're not allowed to use it in such a way as to try and bully or demean the person who it's directed at, and the internet has caused a massive drop in decorum among people since they feel that they can stand at a distance, be anonymous or at least "out of reach" and say what they want without consequence. This is still a private server after all, not the government.

Mustangs are plentiful enough that I'm not losing any sleep over it.
After all, new ones are popping up all the time (you can't tell me a recent restoration in the UK of a combat vet that was found 40 years after being buried on a beach is anything less than a new airframe).

If this plane can't fly any longer due to the fire damage, at least there is still enough for a static display.

Would we be having this conversation if the plane were lost (literally and to history) in a fatal accident?
Probably not, warbirds are lost all the time and members don't bemoan the loss due to the pilot's actions (or poor maintenance/inexperience/stupid weather decisions, bad luck etc.).
