True. However, it may also make it vulnerable to surface ice. Does anyone know how thick it can get in that region? And is the wreck likely to be near or far from shore?

According to the "official" accident report the plane went in quite far from shore. There also has been some dredging throughout the years in the general area due to the shipping channel. Let's not even talk about the storms that occasionally "pop" up over the lake! During the winter the ice gets pretty thick in areas, as to an exact measurement I don't know. I do know around and 1-2 miles from shore its thick enough for people to drive all types of vehicles out on to ice fish. For all I know the plane could have been ripped apart with the dredging or crushed due to the ice pressure. Certainly hoping I'm wrong but until its proven I'll keep searching. :drink3:

between 2 & 4 feet thick, but when it breaks the currents & wind could play havoc. lake erie is not only the shallowest great lake, it is also the most volatile to prevailing weather.
