Bomber to miss air show

By Marty Roney Montgomery Advertiser

The B-29 Superfortress "Fifi" has been grounded with engine problems.

Fans of World War II warplanes got some bad news Friday when it was announced the last B-29 Superfortress in flying condition won't make it to next month's air show at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base.

The Commemorative Air Force's "Fifi" is grounded with engine problems, said Keith Mottas, tour director for the CAF's B-29/B-24 Squadron in Midland, Texas. Needless to say, finding someone who can repair a 60-year-old Wright Cyclone R3350 engine can be difficult.

"We had just completed a major repair on one of the wings, which had some extensive corrosion," Mottas said. "The No. 1 engine developed oil pressure problems, and we sent it to be overhauled. The repair work won't be completed until mid-April, so we will miss the Maxwell show. We are very disappointed because we were looking forward to making the show. We all know Montgomery is a great military town."
