RAF and USAAF Fuselage Squadron/aircraft marking question

Wed Aug 19, 2015 10:48 am

Hi all!

Most pictures of RAF and USAAF fighters show the left side of the fuselage. There, you can see the two letter squadron markings - always forward of the roundel or star and bar, and the aircraft letter aft of the roundel/star and bar.

But, in the RAF, I see a mix as to how the right side of the fuselage is handled.

Sometimes I see the two letter squadron marking aft of the roundel and sometimes forward.

Was there a standard style in the USAAF? Were the two letter squadron markings always forward of the Star and Bar?

thanks!
