I just found these photos in the Portal to Texas History archive. Aviation Archaeology lists this as GDF (Ground Accident Destroyed by Fire) on February 22, 1943 at Pyote AAB in Texas. 592 was assigned to the 30th BS, 19th BG.

You think about all the combat and harsh conditions that B-17 must have endured and survived while with the 19th while trying to stop the Japanese tide, only to meet its end in a stateside ground accident. Poor old bird.

Better that than a scrapyard, at least the firefighters got some useful training off the incident.

I believe 41-2592 is not listed as having served in the Pacific. Steve Birdsall would know for sure.
