The X-1, Spaceship One, and the Spirit of St. Louis have all been lowered to the floor of the Milestones of Flight Gallery at the NASM while they undergo inspection and preservation. This is a unique opportunity to view these machines up close and at a different angle. The Spirit currently has it's cowlings removed.

Could anyone elaborate as to what the exact preservation work will entail?

Not to be too curt/cute, they are not just dusting them off, are they?

Thx,
VL

All three are getting the 3D scan treatment. I'm not sure about the preservation efforts on Spaceship One and the X-1 but at a minimum they are getting a thorough cleaning and look-over. Spaceship One will be re-hung in the tail-feathered position.

The SOSL has some fabric deterioration which is getting attention. The cowlings have been removed and taken over to the Hazy Center where they are being (hopefully) evaluated for removal of the decades old varnish that has caused them to have a yellow hue.
The engine is getting a cleaning, inspection and I believe they are putting a new preservative fluid in it.

Don't let Chuck know they are 3D scanning it. He'll sue them!
