It was a thrill of a lifetime. Seven wonderful days working with the crew of “FIFI”. Days of dawn to dusk total immersion B-29 flight operations. Memories of getting on the flight ramp before sun up and seeing Don the crew chief, flash light in hand, beginning his preflight. Mornings of television interviews and live shots with more of the same in the afternoon. I really enjoyed the photo shoot with Ventura County Fire Department and the Sheriffs Department (Telemundo,(ok she was cold and I had a leather jacket), wasn't bad either).
I'll never forget the thundering early morning four engine warm-ups as I sat on the bucking and shaking tug hooked to the nose wheel and of having the privilege of towing her. I won't forget the stress of being “ramp boss” and the relief of working with the most professional and easy going group of men and women in the CAF.
It was a long week with a lot of hard work, great food, wonderful support on the ramp, an incredible if humbling learning experience and I would do it again (in two years!) in a heart beat. If the story ended there I would have been very, very pleased. But it unbelievably got a whole lot better! The flight crew invited me to fly with them to Palm Springs! Strap me on the wing and I'll hitch hike home! But wait! It even gets better. Can you say cockpit? Jump seat behind the pilot? Fly over my house (fortunately next to Reagan Library)? Ride home in the T-34? Pinch me!
Thanks to all. I could not have done it without your help and direction and patience. I ask forgiveness for barking once in awhile.

Dan
