Hi All,

In keeping with our plan of posting photo galleries of lesser documented museums, we have posted a gallery of photos from the US Navy Museum in Washington, DC. In addition to a tremendous amount of ship oriented artifacts and information they have a few aircraft hanging about, some terrific aircraft carrier models, and a good amount of aviation related artifacts on display. If you’re in DC for the NASM or anything else, take a trip to this museum as well!

Check out the gallery at:

Very cool, thanks for the post -- how I LOVE ship models (bless those who build all scale models)! Wonder if they have a model of the original USS Texas, "Old Hoodoo", that preceded BB-35, that most folks don't even know existed?

Second the nomination, well worth the visit. Should mention it is on the property of the Washington Navy Yard, so not really as easy to get to as the museums on the mall. Really not walkable from the mall. Base access, or a visitors pass, required.

Complete airplane wise, pretty much what is in the pictures show, but many interesting displays, and models. Highlights for me were the Trieste submersible (Marianas Trench), and the Atomic displays, including a Little Boy (pretty rare) and the arming plugs from the Hiroshima strike. There is an annex building as well that is a 100 yards or so from the main museum but easy to miss, also worth the stop- cold war emphasis, good submarine displays, full scale Trident missile (big!), landing craft, more models, a few more atomic weapons, etc.

Budget 2 hours for your average visitor. Naval enthusiasts could stay much longer, significant others of enthusiasts, maybe not so much :D

Don't forget that there is also an archives on site. Some photos, aircraft / unit information available.

Went there several times to document their WW1 railway gun, I assume all that stuff is still there? This was back when the USMC museum was within walking distance and you could see both Iwo Jima flags in the same room, long before all that was moved away to the museum at Quantico...
