F-86 Sabre in the Woods!

F-86 Folks:

Good day!


F-86 D/L, AF 53-1061, X ADC sample. S. of Jackson, Miss I-55S Exit #61.

Does anyone know the status of a poss move of this bird to the USS Kidd at Baton Rouge, Louisiana? It had a canopy a few years ago & now it seems to be at the mercy of the elements & vandals. Photo AEC Sept 2014. Tks in advance.

Its sitting at an abandoned VFW post. There are all kind of ownership issues revolving around it. It seems the VFW owns it and the USAF owns it etc etc.

From what Steve Amos says, there is nothing set in stone and they're preference is for it to go to a museum or some type of aviation institution. I spoke with him on 10/14/2014 to find out more about the plane. I asked if it was for sure going to Louisiana and Mr. Amos says that there have been many who have inquired but once he explàins the bureaucracy they never call back. As the story states, no one is sure as to who the "owner" is and he has many calls into different government agencies trying to find an answer. Also, anyone know the true story as to how it got to where its at? One story is that it had problems and landed in the road ( I don't buy that), another story, with which I tend to believe is that it was trucked in and reassembled on site and with which should make it easier to disassemble for move. Any one interested in going to Mississippi for a week or so?

IF it's the one I'm thinking of, I used to pass it all the time going back and forth to college. It sits right next to I-55 just north of McComb, MS if I remember correctly, on the west side of the interstate.

***Update*** After some phone calls to Steve Amos from Hazelhurst Mississippi as well as the loan department with the NMUSAF turns out the aircraft ( even after all these years ) has been on loan from the NMUSAF. The chances of the aircraft being relocated are very good, but in preliminary talks the preference would be for the aircraft to go to a museum that can properly care for it. As of right now there is no definite plan in place to relocate it but with any luck hopefully it will be moved soon ( maybe spring of 2015?). Of course where ever it goes that party is/would be responsible for any/all costs of the relocation and restoration. As far as the paperwork is concerned,yes there is paperwork involved but not as bad as it is made out to be. The paperwork is easy to complete, its the longevity of others approving the paperwork. I know they all can't be saved but I'm glad that someone (me) took the initiative and put things in motion to try and save this one.

If it is still govt property(??) and it is going to another museum that is co-located or sponsored by a govt agency (like the Selfridge Museum), I'm thinking a DD1149 should be all it takes.

Hmmm.....the USAF must have a standard form or letter they use to transfer custody or loan airframes to nonaffiliated entities back then. There must be a paper trail somewhere. If you haven't seen this yet, it may also be of help.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force, Collection Management Division, in addition to managing the Historical Property Collection of the U.S. Air Force housed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is also responsible for tracking more than 30,000 artifacts on loan to government institutions and certified civilian museums. These include everything from aircraft to the smallest collar insignia. The entire loan program is governed by AFI 84-103.

The museum's Plans & Programs Division oversees the aircraft loaned for long-term outdoor static display at municipalities and veterans' organizations. For more information, call (937) 255-4770.
