geraldine "jerrie" mock, the ohio housewife who 50 years ago became the 1st female pilot to fly solo around the world has passed away. she flew her cessna 180 "spirit of columbus" 23,000 miles in 29 plus days before landing back in columbus. she was noteworthy, but rather obscure in aviation history, hence my posting this in this thread category. a life sized bronze statue of mock was unveiled on the 50th anniversary of her flight at port columbus this passed april, & it was also commemorated at the national air & space museum with an exhibit. glad she saw the accolades of her landmark flight before she went west.
