Go to the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force's website and click onto "b-17 restoration" Lots of photos there. Also, you can sign up for their e-newsletter which will keep you uptodate.

I've looked at the archived newsletters and the pictures on the 8th website...there's not much there that's recent. I was wondering if there was somebody who has visited or is actively working the project who might share some pictures or have an update on the progress...?

Here's what I know. I was there last spring. They've installed a Cheyenne tail in it. Installed a real ball turret, real chin turret, and are working on a top turret restoration now. Great people working there.

Thanks, would be nice to see an update :)
Do hope they correct the artwork on the tail in the future, though. But they have made an amazing progress so far!

I prefer my own memories of that airframe (somewhat limited by my very young age at the time) when it was a working airplane, mapping vast swathes of the Earth.

Anyone know if the Cheyenne turret was one of HangTheExpense's projects?

I don't believe so. When I was still volunteering on the Grissom B-17 we made a deal. They took our tail stinger, took it apart, copied it, made themselves on as they put our back together, and removed corrosion in ours along the way. So it was a win - win. They did a beautiful job. The tail stinger was about to be returned when the NMUSAF asked that it be sent to Dayton. I believe plans are to move the Grissom B-17 indoors somewhere.

They are working to make it very complete. They have a fully operational radio room.

Their ball turret is fully functional. There is a video of it on You Tube.
