Warbird Information Exchange

Hello, first-time poster here. I found this on imgur recently.

From what I can tell, it appears to be a P-40F or L from late 1943. Can't read the full tail number but the last 4 digits appear to be 0693. If anyone could help me find the unit it was posted to, that would be wonderful

It appears to have a US flag on the bottom of the wing, I am wondering if it North Africa or Italy, the photo has to be 1943 or later, the border on the bars could be either red (1943) or blue (1944), if I was to bet, 1943, North Africa

It's a P-40L, serial either 42-10593 or 42-10693... I kinda wanna lean toward the latter.

Dunno which outfit it's from without doing a bit of digging... my knowledge of P-40s in the MTO is kinda sketchy still.

Pretty sure it's from the 33rd FG. Could be North Africa or Sicily.

This plane could possibly be from the 57FG that flew P-40's off the USS Ranger.
My friend from Santa Rosa, CA, Ed "Duke" Ellington was one of those pilots. I have a book of the 57th FG group's exploits.
I'll look for the book. Maybe this link can help.

The P-40s that flew off the Ranger in July of '42 were short tail early production P-40Fs. They were overpainted in desert sand on the upper surfaces and retained the U.S. ARMY on the lower wing surfaces. They did not carry the flag insignia on the fuselage. The P-40 in the posted pic may be a
replacement aircraft obtained by the 33rd from the 325th FG which turned over a number of their aircraft to the 33rd upon their arrival in North Africa in 1943. Here is a pic of P-40Ls on the Ranger in 1943, quite possibly from the 325th.

Those birds look to be long tail.Its very hard to tell from that angle but I believe that block of a/c with 42-105___ were longtail .A larger pic would remove all doubt.

They are long tail, as were all P-40Ls. Note the four guns on the a/c in the right foreground, another identifier of the "L".
