That one?! I hadn't heard about that one having problems. Interesting….. first the French one, and now this one. With a scheme like that, you'd expect it to be going to Red Bull or something.

Ya know... an all polished metal FW-190 would look pretty slick.

I don't get pilots who fly prop warbirds with an helmet and oxygen mask.

A helmet is a personal choice as is a oxygen mask. I have flown in a lot of warbirds, of all types, bombers, fighters, trainers, liaisons, cargo and never had a reason to wear or want a oxygen mask. I do have a helmet and do wear it at times, depending on the flight or warbird.

What is your warbird experience to think that everyone should wear a helmet and mask ?

I do not have flying warbird experience at the moment, i am a volunteer with the CAF. Working on my warbird experience :-)

. But i did fly AT-301 when I was crop dusting. Sometimes I used an helmet, other times just an a hat.

I simply think that from an esthetic point of view a modern helmet+ oxygen mask don't fit in the picture. I do not think that everyone should wear a helmet and a mask.

From what I heard, various warbird owner use Campbell helmets. Providing a kevlar protection underside a "classic look",
Campbell provides also a fake oxygen mask embedding the microphone. The goal was to reduce engine noise, etc in the microphone.

I'm sorry to hear about the belly landing of D-FWMV, this was the one that had the previously-mentioned wing deformation problem. If I remember rightly, it has only recently re-appeared after the rectification work. Commiserations to the owner, not an ideal few years.

On the topic of masks and helmets….

Talking with a pilot at Geneseo one year, he remarked that you felt safer and more secure inside a helmet. Maybe its a placebo effect where the pilot feels more protected, therefore more confident and safe while flying the aircraft.

This is not a Flug Werk aircraft. It is an original FW-190.

There is more than 1 FW-190 at Gosshawk, the one that had the gear collaspe was a new build, Collins Foundation is a original,

Collings has a FW-190 F8, WK # 931682, radial engine original airframe and a FW190-D V-12 engine. The F8 was the old "White 1" project now being rebuilt by American Aero
Services at New Smyrna Beach ,Florida. I think they are doing his "Dora" also.

I suppose that a good Helmet protect you also in case of fire...

White 1 is at both shops. The wings are at American Aero and the fuselage is at Gosshawk.

Theirs is not a Flug Werk bird

FHC has the only authentic airworthy FW-190 and it has a BMW 801 engine. The airframe was restored at Gosshawk and Mike Nixon rebuilt the engine. Since restoration it has only been flown by Steve Hinton.
