It is a little disconcerting that the safety of us ground pounders relies on a little sticker between the pilot's legs.

Hmmm, Larry, believe me, there are a lot of things that ground pounders have to depend on pilots for beside the opening and closing of the bomb bay doors at the right time. For instance, we know how to work the flap override switch that allows full travel. You know, the one that is supposed to prevent full extension if you have the pylons occupied where the flaps would smash into them. I distinctly heard you say today, "well, guess we still need pilots around!" Might be good for something once in awhile, right?? :-) I felt a lot better afterwards knowing that I am still needed!! :-) JR PS Be sure to check back tomorrow for a full report on today's events and progress.

TOUCHÉ JR but still disconcerting.

Larry

Hey Larry, disconcerting is NOT having ace mechanics, sparkies and avionics guys to restore an old airplane!! I am very happy that we have all of our guys and feel very lucky to have such a good crew!!! Here is some more of your handiwork. Ray did a great job building the mount for the probe for the AOA which CAPFlyer guessed earlier. Here is the AOA annunciator installed behind the gunsight mount. On the ground, the gunsight will be in place, but removed for flight so the indicator will not be seen until then. Cool idea! Again, we would like to thank Bendix-King for helping us out with the unit. :-) JR

New rate of climb indicators were installed with 0-6000 ft range as in the original panel. Thanks to the contributors who made this possible!! :-) JR

Another project was started by JR yesterday. The oil cooler on the right side wasn't leaking when the airplane arrived so it was not sent off for overhaul. With the new engine going on that side, we have reconsidered it and may send it off. We are going to pull it out and give it a good flush to see what the status is now. If it doesn't look right, it will be another overhaul item. Any bets on it? Maybe we should start a pool? :-) Next will be the oil tank to be pulled and refurbed the same way the left side was done. Larry and Stan have been chasing down the lines from the right engine to the instrument panel. Those bubbles in the clear plastic line are bad news. One of the servicing valves on the firewall appears to be leaking. We will have to figure out if it can be overhauled or find a replacement. Since it is a rather unusual item, hope we don't have any trouble finding one. JR

I received this photo from Hurlburt Base Public Relations in 1969 when I visited my older brother who was going through FAC training on C-123K's in preparation for a tour with the Candlesticks out of NKP.

Depicted is B-26K (A-26A) 64-17676. I assume the picture had been taken at an earlier time due to the white undersides (there are other pictures of 676 in thei thread with black undersides).

Cubs2jets... wow, that is a very rare picture. Haven't seen that before. The camo pattern is different ... look at the tail... plus the light colored underside. They had an interim paint job with that for awhile, but when they went to SEA, they got the black paint. This is early on because the carb air intakes are still in the cowling face instead of the tropical scoop up on the top of the cowling. The other give-away is that the ordnance is not painted over on the bottom to black. Bob or Randy, what is that hanging on the outboard pylons? The rest look like nape to me. Great shot! Thanks for posting it.

That looks to be an LAU-3 Rocket pod. The pod carried nineteen 2.75" FFARs (Folding Fin Aerial Rockets) (FFARs). In the early days the pods were all white like this. Later on they came from the factory OD.

This is not the NKP ramp, so I'm not sure where it is. Hurlburt? England? Panama?.

We never flew LAU-3s during my time at "The Fanny". HQ 7th AF (Gen. Momyer and the rest of the jet fighter AF) tried to force the Air Commandos to use these in the early days at NKP. Just as LBJ tried to run every detail of the war from his desk (or bed) in Washington, the 7th AF tried to run the operation over the Ho Chi Minh Trail from Saigon. In typical Air Commando fashion, when "Air Commando One", Col. Heine Aderholt, received the rockets & pods he traded them away to Air America... who in turn gave them to the Hmong who could use them. (The Hmong used them as ground launched rockets against the bad guys.)

Bob, thanks for the ID on the outboard pylons. The picture was reported to be taken at Hurlburt by the poster. I think they moved to England AFB in '66 if I remember what Randy said. Green and white paint is gone, but no mod on the carb air intake so this could be '66 or '67 maybe??? The more I think about it, since it was a highly classified mission at NKP, I am surprised that Hurlburt was handing out pics of modified A-26's in SEA camo. Wouldn't that raise any eyebrows? Guess it didn't though. Oh well, what do I know?? :-) Oh, I do know the Nimrod reunion will be held at Hurlburt this year after the Air Commando Association meeting in OCT. JR
