To the WIX members,
My thoughts were to post a few photos of a Corsair mishap I've had in my archives that looked by all purposes to match that of yesterday's tragic mishap and by no means was my thought to hijack this thread. Hope I haven't distracted from the importance and seriousness of what this threads original discussion entailed and If I have I'll pull my posts ASAP.

I sincerely hope I haven't shown disrespect towards you and your father. This was not my intention. I can't recall off hand when and where I found your father's photos but I've had these copies for quite some time now. I must apologize for not posting valid and accurate information regarding your father's tragic accident and I'm also sincerely sorry your father was injured to the extent he was. Again if I have shown any disrespect I will certainly pull the photos immediately.

Thank you very much as well for your informative post. Although sadly tragic for your father, it is welcoming to be given the opportunity to hear of your father's history and sacrifice. He is certainly another of this countries true hero's and I'm certainly proud to now know the real story behind your father's photos.

FWIW I was thinking the comparisons of these two separate accidents could perhaps help assist in understanding the how's and why's these things happen.

Marines Dream was last summer and nosed over due to excessive braking.
It didn't get off the pavement as I recall which was fortunate. Bob Pond's FG-1D suffered a TO power failure back in the 80's and went over on its back after crossing a road.

Unfortunately, we don't have anymore then one or two that have already been posted, no Vertical stabilizer.
His accident was in 1949, VF 82 US NAS Jacksonville, Fl.
I have the v/stab of his hellcat, but that's another story.

No disrespect taken, my husband gave those pictures to a friend of ours with permission to keep use or post, I just wanted to share how it happened. Thank you for asking.

As others have said I am also glad that Jim is okay, and the Corsair can be fixed.

I have been a member of WIX for many years, and do not post very often, mostly come here to learn what I can about the warbirds that I have loved since I was a young kid and my dad began taking me to airshows and fly-ins.

What bothers me is that I used to come here and to get the information straight from the people that are directly involved with warbirds as an owner, or maintainer and now it seams that everyone is quick to judge others and hide behind screen names when they post. I respect those that use their real name as either their screen name, or in the signature of their posts. I firmly believe that this is as well as the ability to quickly flame someone in relative anonymous manner hiding behind a screen name is one of many reasons that many people directly involved within the warbird community have stopped posting here. This is sad.

Man up, sign your name, report the facts, don't speculate, have a little respect for the families involved, and for your fellow man. If you don't like something someone says, do the respectable thing and keep your trap shut. The Mods on here have mentioned that if things get out of hand that they will lock a thread. I say lock it as soon as it gets out of hand, temporarily, or permanently ban the users who continuously whack the beehive. And if I am banned for this post, then so be it, I don't post here that much anyways, I come here to learn.

Your post showing the strength of the Corsair was on the money since all most of us have seen is the News camera shots from the air. I think it explained how you could survive an accident like this quite well.

My impression is there is an element of truth to what you say but only a small part. From what I can see a lot of owners and operators have gone to facebook to get the word out about what they are doing rather than wix. I'd do the same if it were me.

Not sure what to add to all this that hasn't already been nicely stated by Eric. The only thing that comes to mind for me is the very real fact that this website (as well as most others) has an uncanny way of causing confusion and misunderstanding in people's responses to other people's posts. I've seen flare ups time and again from members who take someone's well meaning post as some sort of threat or insult. (I had this problem when I first started playing on this crazy website long ago). Does this happen all the time? Of course not! but it does happen quite a bit. It's simply the power of (or lack there of) using a keyboard to do your communicating.

I'll be honest that since I now use my real name as my WIX screen name I have found that my posts tend to be much more responsible and mature. I now feel a sense of accountability that I didn't have or felt necessary to display when I was some kooky anonymous dude. Trust me it works much better to be held accountable. Perfection? ... H*ll No!, but at least it's better than it was when no one knew my name.

Soooooo! what was this thread about again? Oh yah! a tragic mishap to one of the finest Corsairs out there, but thankfully no one hurt and that's all that really matters.

FWIW I usually spend a few minutes every time I pre-flight an airplane going over my emergency procedures. (As well as passengers) I would assume this to be common practice for the warbird folks as well, as their equipment is far more complex than anything I fly. I've also spent time studying the structural limitations and fire possibilities of the aircraft I fly to be as informed and educated as possible regarding what I could possibly experience or expect if something goes terribly wrong. I would sincerely hope that other pilots, no matter what they fly, practice similar procedures on a regular basis no matter how tedious or mundane it can be.

It can also be quite educational and beneficial to take some time out to stop by your home base airport and chat with your emergency folks on site about all the things they do on their end when a possible accident and emergency develops. Usually very nice people who are happy to chat with you and show you around. Usually great and valuable information can be gained as well.

Most likely no new revaluation to the pilots here on WIX, but flying is nothing short of constant education and safety practices IMHO.

It's not social media the problem, It's people as usual.

I have taken pictures of the airplane after the accident and sitting in Pat Epps's hangar but i refrain from publishing them.
