AT-6C Texan N164EW crashed in a wooded area near Roxbury, NY, today. Plane wrecked badly. Pilot suffered gash to head but he will make it (thankfully). Prayers for a speedy recovery!

Above: Blood-stained wreckage left behind after the crash. Photo by Lissa Harris.

Thanks loads for the picture of the bloodstains, Lissa. :?
Note also among the commenters there's a woman whose husband was killed in the crash of a Yak-52, and she didn't appreciate it either.

I have emailed and asked them to take this photo down. Journalism at its worst.

I believe this to be the snj from the Cleveland chapter of the commemorative air force based at lorain county regional airport, Elyria / Oberlin ohio. it's the only bird they have. a very small chapter to say the least. just heard about it today. glad there were no serious injuries or fatalities!! damage is substantial though.

Tom, not accurate... spoke with one of the CAF pilots (and XO) for the Cleveland Wing. Their SNJ (in 'natural' silver WWII livery) is undergoing an engine inspection today.

Fly safe
Chris

Hoping for speedy recovery of the pilot involved.

The plane was owned, and was being piloted by James Leavelle who owns an air show. The plane itself was quite famous, as was the pilot. From what I have heard, he suffered a large gash on his head, but is otherwise in pretty good shape.

James owns an "air show".... Lucky him... I have to use other's air shows...

Man...that makes me sick.

I helped restore that bird when it was with its previous owner here in MT. Former SAAF machine. Helped install those P & W decals. Glad to hear Jim is going to be ok. Truly a sad day here in Bozeman the day he flew home with his new girl.

Although I wasn't offended by the photo (especially dark on dark) since I looked at it has a good lesson. Hoping that maybe someone may see that and decide to wear a helmet. Someone mentioned a family member of deceased pilot being very offended among many others. With that being said I had a very nice chat with Polly Compton today. Her husband Bill is a very dear friend and has some may remember was the owner of F6F-3 08825 N4965V. Bill was badly injured in the crash of the F6F suffering numerous injuries inc. a severe concussion and a fractured skull. Bill today is still suffering from the effects of that terrible 1977 crash and now has no memory or real thought process and is mostly invalid. Polly saw the story of the T-6 crash and just couldn't understand why anyone would be offended by the photo. Has she put it "if I or Bill had seen that photo before his crash I guarantee you he would have been wearing a helmet". Over to the experts.....................

Fair point, Jack. I guess for me it's context; the fact that it was in a general news area rather than a "don't let this happen to YOU" PSA for pilots (where it might do more good). Same reason you'd want to show Signal 30 in Driver's Ed class rather than amid the Saturday morning cartoons...
