Awesome! Been looking forward to this one for awhile. That makes three new Corsairs flying this year!

Help me out here: is this the actual FAH 603 airframe or is it another FG with a Honduran paint job?

Well, sorta, I now believe. Seems the airplane was originally FAH 613 and was rebuilt using parts from FAH 608 (among others), so the only part of it that is 603 is the paint job. 613 seems not to have been on the FAH's active list during the Soccer War--perhaps it was in storage or heavy maintenance or something--because though 612 and 614 are listed as having been on strength, 613 is missing...

Stephan W:

Good day!

You are partially correct as some parts/pieces of FAH 608 were used in the Pkg of FAH 603 sent to NZ c. 1987.

The Darwin sample is a composite aircraft. The center fuselage & aft section most likely belong to the original FAH 603. Buno 123168 The wings came from the poss FAH 608. One thing is clear, it's not FAH 613 as it was sold sometime c.1977 to a Midwest TWA pilot after years in temp storage & later on moved to the FAH boneyard in c. 1969.

The only person that may have some answers for us as far as the original markings on Buno 123168 is the person that did some sanding/restoration of the fuselage (pic included) prior to sale to Mr. Pete Thelan of Ft. Lauderdale Fla. c. 1985-86. The original FAH 603 had some VC-3 & FAH 603 markings in the aft section. It was a poss NP #8 sample. Photo via 619

Zorro, you seem to be interested in the Honduras Corsairs. There's some info and photos of them in the new issue of Warbirds International (July/August 2014). Just got mine in the mail today.

Well Stephen Wilkinson, re your superb example of NON investigative journalism in the mag Aviation History, you obviously did most of your research on the second page of this forum. To clear things up, this aircraft bu no 123168 was identified as such by the Vought const # found inside the rear fuse hatch as A10-353, I also managed to find the number 123168 pencilled on the back of the instrument panel which had not been removed until arrival here so provenance is clear!! Not sure how zorro gets the idea that 608's wings are on it or how you come to the conclusion that many collectors are talking about its origin !!!! I certainly hope you did not get paid for the article because you drew heavily on this forum for your info, its a real shame you didnt bother to read the "FAH608 need Tulio's help" thread, you would have found all the answers to an accurate article there. Maybe you could write the next article on a B model Mustang, should be a ripper!!!! Pete Bradley
p.s. not sure how the FAA views history & traceability, I had to justify why I nominated the serial # I did and what its background was to the regulatory body here which is CASA!!!

Pete:

Good day!

I'm on my way to get the latest Aviation History mag to read the SW article.Ther are still so many loose ends out there.

Will you plz post a photo of the #123168 behind the main ins panel?? That one is news to us the F4U buffs.Great find!!

Also, while we wait to get some pics fm France of the real Buno 122179 (FAH 604) will you plz post if poss pics/close-ups of the Vought id plates found on the wings of your a/c Buno 123168?? This will clear a lot of issues with both aircraft. Tks in advance.

p.s Plz ck on FB "Chance Vought F4U Corsair" the 122179 thread for further details posted today 9/15/14. Tks
