NARTU Seattle Corsairs

Fri Apr 25, 2014 11:54 am

Friend of mine's Dad passed away yesterday (Robert E. Shannon). Mr. Shannon flew Hellcats, Corsairs and Bearcats in the Naval Reserves (VF 891, NAS Sand Point, Seattle). Any information on squadron history + aircraft would be appreciated.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I find it fascinating that these squadrons didn't have any national insignia on the fuselage.

Bela, do you happen to know if his logbooks still survive? Our Corsair was at Seattle for a while. Maybe he flew it.

I don't know, but I will ask and post the answer back here. I think he was at Sand Point in the early 1950s.
What's the BuNo of your Corsair?

Bela, so sorry as I just re-read your first post. Please be sure to tell your friend his father will be missed. His memory certainly will not be forgotten as he was a warrior and true hero who served his country well. May he rest in peace.

A couple more things on NAS Sand Point, wish Bill (The Inspector) was still with us as he would most likely have a lot of input as well.

The below photos are of NAS sand Point c 1955 (SDASM archives)

Jack, are you sure about that? This sure looks like Lake Washington to me and I can see one of the Stations PBYs in the background. Do you have a copy with Navy printing on it?

Mark, I'm working on a model of a -4 Corsair marked similarly to this. Do you have any pics of -4s from this unit?

Hi Snake, yah! I've got a bunch of stuff I'll take a look see. But just to be clear, J Cook's info IS the correct info on that particular corsair, mine IS NOT correct (I hate when that happens )
Anyway I have several Corsair threads posted here somewhere way back several pages. Do a search of my threads if you like and you should be able to find some neat stuff.

Can I talk you into a NAS Grosse Ile FG-1D?
