It's a rather surprising choice to bring the Spitfire VIII over from Australia for the show when they've a couple of IXs based in NZ already.

I'm actually more surprised that more aircraft from Australia don't visit NZ for this show.

And an alternate reality? Importing aircraft to NZ shows is a great idea, but it'd be interesting if it were this one.

Hi Errol,

To clear up any misunderstanding : my first post was to point out that the main photo (of the Australian Mk VIII Spitfire wearing a 'sharks teeth' nose paint job) on the Wanaka Show's website was captioned by them as a 'P40 Kittyhawk', no doubt thrown by the nose art paint job (aren't all sharks mouth noses P40's?).

The next post by Mike possibly assumed that this Spit was being brought to New Zealand for the Wanaka Show, and my next post then agreed with him that we had enough flyable Spits in NZ already.

In the meantime the Wanaka website people had replaced their main photo from the Mk VIII Spit to a Yak 3 (correctly captioned this time).

As the original reason for my posts had been rectified I thought it pointless to keep them there so I deleted them.

Ah, thanks. Probably better left, as gaps in data are how the rumours start!

This year's Warbirds over Wanaka show will, I think, be a make or break for the future of the event.

I don't know anything about this year at Wanaka, but personally felt that the last one (2012) was a bit disappointing, I got the feeling that it was all a bit tired and 'same-old, same-old'. IMHO both Omaka and 'Wings Over Wairarapa' were (are) superior in many ways : presentation/variety of aircraft, customer satisfaction, value for money to name but a few.

As a long term supporter of Wanaka I sincerely hope they will keep going for many years to come.

I hope nobody takes offence at these remarks.

With the reducing number of locally-based warbirds, they are in a corner that is getting harder and harder to get out of. The Hurricane is gone (having not flown at the last show it was present for), the local Mustang is for sale I believe, and most aircraft of interest are based from Omaka north. For nearly everyone not living in the lower South Island it is cheaper and easier to get to Omaka or Wairarapa (or Tauranga), and the aircraft in common are what, 70-90%? And your main non-enthusiast 'catchment' metro area is recovering from the huge economic and domestic stress of the earthquakes.

Just to be clear, it was the Warbirds News piece that was headed with a Gavin Conroy photo of the Temora Spitfire VIII, specifically captioned to the effect that it was coming to Warbirds over Wanaka. The Warbird News item appeared to be a cut-and-paste of a press release from the organisers, so I assumed it was accurate. This heading photo and caption now appears to have been changed.

Somehow Gavin Conroy's magnificent photo of the Temora Aviation Museum's Spitfire Mk.VIII got posted with this story before... and the wrong caption came along for the ride too. Many apologies to all concerned. Here's another of the uber-talented Gavin Conroy's famous shots of a Yak-3M which is indeed scheduled to appear at Wanaka in a few days time.
