Thanks Scott. Interesting lists of aircraft on loan from the NMUSAF. Makes you wonder how many of them will still be around in lets say 10 years. I would say not many except for the ones on display indoors.

I still say that plane should be taken completely apart and be rebuilt to fly. Glacier Girl restoration standards essentially… Whose got a check book?

I'd be quite happy to see it stabilized and displayed in a sympathetic manner, perhaps a in diorama of its resting place in the swamp, but indoors in an environment which will prevent further deterioration. Otherwise, they might just as well have left it in the swamp, the end result of it crumbling away into dust will be just the same either way.

A couple of things. I too would rather see it indoors. That said there is a restoration plan and being out of the swamp is indeed better for it. As for flying it, take the data plate off of it, and build another one from scratch. That is what you would be doing anyway.

The two are mutually exclusive. You either preserve it, or you throw away all the corroded metal and build what is effectively a brand-new airplane and fly it.

Storing an airplane beside the ocean, is only marginally better than storing it in the ocean!

Restoring this historic airframe to fly would leave almost nothing original.

I'm in the camp that thinks preservation and conservation, in a climate controlled environment, is the route to go for this irreplaceable bit of history.

For some reason I thought Al Hagen and the Tallichet family loaned it to the Pacific Aviation Museum, is this true?

I thought the same thing, that it is on long term loan.

I just hope they will be able to get it indoors in the not too distant future.

That's just not realistic.I can promise you that the wings holding together is only due to the fact that its an early B-17.
