Huey wanted for VFW in MI

Sat Feb 15, 2014 9:10 pm

I'm looking for a Huey that could be used for static display only at a VFW in Michigan.
anyone know where I can find one?
It is planned to be used as a Vietnam vets memorial at the VFW.

If you go on barnstormers.com, there are two Huey projects currently for sale. Best of luck.

Anybody have a list of static display Hueys?
especially Hueys at VFWs in the Michigan area.
with so many VFWs closing, The MI VFW is hoping for a transfer of a Huey from one VFW to another.

There's a subject on some UH-1 HUEY'S Stored at the Melbourne , Florida, airport and how the Indiana group Huey 369 got 2 airframes. I google earthed the site KMLB, airport , and the image was from last Fall and there was still about 50+ airframes. Possibly contact the Indiana group about how they got theirs. I flew in the 369 Groups Huey a couple years ago at an event in Benton Harbor, Michigan, really cool. I went with my older brother and he flew with me. He commented that the last time he flew in a Huey he was being Medivac'd out of a rice paddy in 67.' The Huey 369 group's website says they got the Huey's from Scotts Helicopter Service , LeSueur, Minnesota. But they would still be a wealth of info on getting a UH-1 airframe.

You may have some luck by contacting the director of the Selfridge Air Museum. I think he is/was a retired COL and had some connections.

Distance of course, will be the main issue here, as it will mean increased transportation expenses.

But, I saw a semi-derelict UH-1B IIRC, at the Wilson, NC airport, on the National Guard's grounds. I spoke (this was many years ago) with one of the NCNG officers, who told me that they wanted to get rid of the helicopter, and in jest, offered it to me, if I could remove it from their installations.

Also, Easterwood Field, near College Station TX, had a number (6 or 8) UH-1Hs abandoned in a field within the airport boundaries.

Good luck!
