I am looking to see if anyone has ever installed modern radio equipment in to an original War Two Royal Air Force Type “B” helmet. I have found several acceptable candidates and I’d like to install a functioning David Clark ear speakers and boom mic. (Of course without ruining the original look of the helmet as much as possible.)

Anyone have any experience in modifying a Type “B” to accept modern equipment? Is there any way to make the boom mic attach without undue harm to the helmet or spoil the look of the type “B”

Have you considered something like the Clarity Aloft line of headsets? They have good passive noise reduction and fit under just about any hat or helmet as is.

I have put in new headphones into a type B, actually a Fleet Air Arm type C, which has the larger earcups of the B. pretty easy, i cut out the old cups, cut the leather to the size of the new cups, "sewed" in the gel seals and filled the outside flaps with high density foam. I had used the Headsets inc noise cancelling kit, which works very well, but not really suited to this install. In passive mode, it works well. i also installed a MIL spec mic in the oxygen mask, but it had slightly too much gain, so i am swapping that out with a David Clark type electrec mike.
