Mark - the event is an annual one but Plane Sailing, the operators of the Catalina, does not attend every year. We have been three times in total. If you Google Scalaria Air Challenge you will find lots of information about past events. There is some good viodeo although note it is an amalgamation of several years shows.

Our ladies were briefed accordingly before they went up onto the wing - we have a metalled centre section also.

I can image a thorough debriefing was required following the swim.

I'm an artist myself and have dabbled in this style of art several times over the years.
I've only recently found out about Hugault's work. He has put out three books of his work within the last 3-4 years and I have 2 of them with # 3 on the way. They're very thin books (and not exactly cheap, nor are they in English) but worth it if you enjoy his style. I think i have his style figured out, they look like computer-colored pencil drawings in most cases. I think so, anyway.
Really good stuff and I love the detail he puts into his work, he gets all the small stuff just right in most cases (I only noticed in a drawing of Marilyn visiting Korea, where the GI have red nametapes on their M-51 jackets, which of course isn't correct, it's the only error I've spotted so far).
Frankly, I'm surprised his stuff isn't more well known here in the US, nobody I know has heard of him before...

Since you (p51) put some life back into this thread, I suppose I should re-post those LIFE photos again since the dipsh*t who pissed me off back then has been finally banned for good.
They are good photos I must say. The art? well to each his own IMHO, nothing wrong with it just to each his own.

Some things never change.....

David, I always wanted to ask what both the water and ambient air temperatures are like there.
The water isn't so blue because it's in the Caribbean or whatever, because it's not.
Isn't it in the Austrian mountains? And at what elevation?

I've never been to the Alps, but I've been to Lake Tahoe several times. It is at something like 6,200 ft MSL, and even in August the water is COLD!!!

Hi Rajay:

The Wolfgangsee is in the Salzkammergut region of Austria close to Salzburg although a darn sight nearer by air than road! The surface elevation of the lake is 538 m (1765 ft) with a lot of higher ground all around. On the day I took that photo it was a very sunny day with lots of blue sky so the water 'colour' is probably partly caused by that and possibly also by using the 'landscape' mode on my pocket digital camera! The time of year was July and the water was mildly bracing rather than cold - I dived in after the young ladies (and after a suitable interval) but will not be posting photos

James Kightly, journalist and author of the Vintage Aeroplane Writer, shows off the glamorous postwar conversion of Consolidated PBY-5A 34045 (civil registry N69043) to a Landseaire flying yacht. His informative and droll image captions are not to be missed.
You’ll forgive me for marveling at the aesthetics of film photography, flying boats and pleasant company, of course.

The photographs were taken around February 1950 by renowned LIFE cameraman, Loomis Dean. The 'boat was lost in a crash at Sao Paulo on the 5th July 1953 carrying a Brazilian registration. Hopefully it wasn't transporting any of the ladies at the time of the loss.
