Orlando Paintball Park w/a Dead Warbird. Any WIXers Nearby?

Mon Dec 30, 2013 9:53 am

The owner of Battlefield Orlando tells me this old girl has been there at least a decade, maybe more. Makes sense as how Orlando Helicopter Airways in nearby Sanford modified Sikorsky S-55's for many years and had "leftovers" when they quit the business. Time has not been kind to the magnesium/aluminum-alloy skin. I can tell this is an early H-19/HRS/HO4S but, have no idea as to it's true identity.

Are there any WIXers living near 1251 S. County Road 13 (East Orlando) who would be willing to visit and try to ID this airframe for myself and SIDSIKO? There's a slight chance the modification plate may still exist. The owner has graciously granted his approval for such a mission. If so, please PM me and I'll give his contact info as well as send pictures of where the plate is located.

So sad to see such a proud Sikorsky bird die like this. But hey… you really can't save them all.

I could check it out sometime. I don't recall seeing it on aerialvisuals.ca. Will I be able to walk out there and get it without being paintballed?

Harry Doan had a bunch of H-19's in his backyard in New Smyna. Does anyone know where they all went after his death?

A PM is coming your way and, yes, the owner makes it sound like a weekday when he's there would work and you'll have no fear of coming out with that tie-dye look.

I'll let Sid chime in here but, I think by the time Doan was killed he was pretty much out of the business although its certainly possible this one came from his holdings. Here's one of his that survived until at least 1996 but, is definately not the one at the park.

Interesting. This is a wing center section off of a DC-3.

Many times you learn alot as a thread progresses. For ex....I was wondering what that center-wing section went to.
