This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Of the 16,000+ Huey helicopters made by Bell, anyway of knowing how many are still flying today in whatever roles they now play?

We have a local UH-1 known as "Eagle One" operated by the Stratford Police Department (as far as I can tell). But they can be seen flying this bird pretty much year round. Based at the Sikorsky Airport KBDR.

Nice to see some ex-military UH-1s flying.
About 10 years ago, the Army still had a few as hacks at Ft. Hood.
There was a large Apache/OH-58Ds exercise in west Texas and the commander had a Huey to make trips back to base for parts/people etc. he loved the thing said for this job it was better than a Blackhawk, and a lot cheaper.

There is still one being used as an air ambulance in the WV area. We used to see it once in a while when down there.

The last few U.S Army examples were only retired in Germany about two years ago now - wonderful sight to see them come in for the occasional fuel stop.

We're still making them here in Amarillo. Turning out the UH-1Y's now for the Marines.

The Spokane County sheriff has a OH-58, all dolled up with computers and infrared TV.
They had a spare "stock" model for training, but I think they sold it while no one was looking. IIRC, they get free DoD surplus, but after awhile they can sell them ...nice work if you can get it.

The Army officially retired the last of their active Huey's at Fort Hood in August of 2012....it rained.
There are 641 UH-1's currently on the FAA register...
It would be interesting to see how many are still flying world wide.

In Australia we have 3 UH-1H and 2 UH-1B's currently on the register.

There are 3 UH-1H's based at Minden-Tahoe a couple miles west of me. They are operated by NDF, Nevada Division of Forestry. At least one operates quite often. They have had several mods done to them for operation at our higher altitudes and temperatures.
