It's so easy to take things for granted and to find ways to be upset and complain about what we don't have in life when actually it only takes but a few minutes to look at a old photo, read a few pages of history, visit a memorial or just watch a veteran or serviceperson walk down the street to realize just how lucky we actually are.

And because of so many sacrifices on December 7th, 1941, and the sacrifices of those from all the allied nations who followed afterward I have be able to live pretty well without too many speed bumps along the way. (well most of the time anyway  )

There's several dates a year that I pause and reflect just for a few minutes and give thanks that I live the life I do. Those dates always seem to memorialize those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Those who indeed have given everything have certainly earned a bit of my time each year. It's the least I can do.

Great pics. My aunt by marriage remarried a great guy whose brother was killed on the Arizona. As a kid, I once remember him talking about seeing the twisted remains of the ship when he sailed into Pearl not long after - Quite touching.

I do have a Pearl Harbor for our experts out there - Has the color footage taken by Army doctor Eric Haakenson from the USS Solace ever been found? My understanding was that it was lost, and that all we have left are black and white copies. However, every now and then I come across a reference that leads me to believe that it may have been rediscovered. Does anybody here know the true story?

A very sensitive and moving selection, Mark. And that photo of you and beautiful Reggie seems symbolic of the real America. To this Brit anyway ...

Thanks guys, Reggie is quite a celebrity around here as he just arrived last year from Ireland. He's got quite the show jumping resume already for being so young still. He's a great guy as you probably can tell in that photo. Other than he bit me right after that photo was taken for not giving him enough treats   :D

Interestingly we have several horses on the ranch from Germany. Many of the worlds best show jumpers come from Germany.

A great post and some wonderful photographs. The one of Ford Island circa 1941 might more likely be circa 1951. Looks like a lot of nosewheel type aircraft in the middle foreground that might be P2V Neptunes, I don't think they are PBYs.

Yah John I was thinking the same thing, but on further review I'm quite certain those are early B-26's. So I'm wondering if Ford Island had a visit from B-26's in late 1941? The C-47's in the foreground look right for 1941.

Thanks Robbie, he's a good one and he keeps getting bigger every day.

Thank you for posting Mark- a great reminder.

I never knew a B-24 was destroyed on the ground, had to look that one up. Seems it was 40-2371 laying over at Hickam before heading further west to Clark.

Maybe 22nd Bomb Group birds fresh off the boat before they headed to the South Pacific/
Australia.

The 22nd B-26's where assembled at Hickam before departing for the south Pacific. A number also remained for the purpose of developing the procedures for equipping them with torpedo's.

Thanks Marauderman26...looks to be about 10-12 of them on the ramp. When did the "long-wing" B-26 begin to be delivered to the Air Corps?

Edit

airnutz,
The 22nd and 38th BG's along with the 28th composite group in Alaska where the only USAAC units sent to the Pacific with the short wings.
The first "Long Wing" B-26's where the B-26B-10 model introduced in February 1943 and sent to Europe and the Mediterranean.

The NAVY did return the Martin B-26 to the Pacific and the Hawaiian Islands in the form of the JM-1 Utility Type and 12 CB-26B's as transports.

Note the JM-1's on the old Luke Field side of Ford Island (Picture is from the NASM): http://airandspace.si.edu/webimages/hig ... -2011h.jpg
