This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

NMUSAF has NO purview over the El Paso 106s. NMUSAF only has input where former USAF aircraft excess to the USAF needs are concerned. That is how they helped to block the 105, they had the ear of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC). The Chairman was reluctant to go against them so they took the USAF position and did nothing. The language died in committee.
However if Congress passed a public law that over rode the USAF and NMUSAF directing the Secretary to transfer, then, in spite of protests it WILL happen. I can assure you, they won't like it but if they don't transfer then they would be breaking the law and would probably would be found in contempt of Congress.

Now that we know the USAF has no jurisdiction over these Lawn Darts, where could you source serviceable J-79's? Are there any in the public/private sector? could you be able to buy them from a foreign country w/o state dept. blocking it? I.E. Germany just retired there phantoms, Israel, Japan, Spain?

So, whats the latest news on these F-106's? I haven't seen the ad on Barnstormers for awhile, were they sold?
It looked like they had a total of five at one point, so one or two got sold.....The last I saw, he was selling them for $25K ea, seemed like they were getting desperate to move them, maybe had some storage problems?
On a side note: Barnstormers recently had a JT4, in storage can for sale. not sure of the price.
Speaking of engines....Would it be possible to retrofit a newer, better engine in place of the J75? Perhaps an early series JT8D.....maybe a -17? That would give similar ,if slightly more power (dry thrust) and the JT8 should be similar dimensions, within 3-4" less diameter and about 24" less length than the J75 according to specs I've found. Perhaps use a modified J79 afterburner?
Obviously, there would need to be substantial modification to the aircraft....any thoughts? BTW....No, I'm not crazy.....my mom had me tested!
