USS MIDWAY MUSEUM - The former naval aviators and sailors who make up much of the staff and huge volunteer corps of the Midway Museum don't get excited by much - but they were excited about this.

The arrival on two flatbed semis of a famous WWII aircraft - the Grumman F4F Wildcat.

Until today, the museum's collection of some 30 planes did not include the fighter, which was a big part of the US victory over the Japanese in the pivotal Battle of Midway, after which the USS Midway - and now Midway Museum - was named.

After three years of restoration at a hanger the museum leases at north island, the light and nimble fighter was hoisted aboard.

89-year-old Midway docent Glenn Tierney told me it was like meeting an old friend. "This was my first serious aircraft coming out of flight training," he says. "It actually saved the bacon at the Battle of Midway, protecting the dive bombers who sank the Japanese carriers the same carriers at Pearl Harbor by the way."

How the Wildcat came to the museum is a story in itself.

In the early 90's the plane was found at the bottom of Lake Michigan. It had gone into the drink during pilot-carrier training in the 40's.

The lake's cold fresh water, and lack of oxygen at the bottom, helped preserve it.

It was sitting at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida, waiting to be restored, when it was decided its new home should be at the Midway museum. it will be a major piece of their planned Battle of Midway 3D holographic theatre.

"That's one thing we always wanted to have from the time we first got the Midway 10 years ago," says Karl Zingheim, one of the museum's historians, "but we had other things we have to take care of and its just as well - the delay because the advances in cinematic technology has advanced considerably in the decade."

Wildcat, you needed a good home, and you have found one - in San Diego.

Sharp looking restoration! Anyone know the ID on it? F4F-3s 11824 and 12290 are listed on the Registry as "in storage" with the USNAM as of several years ago.
(edited to correct 2nd #)

The website for Midway restorations lists 12290.

Dang, I was there last month and asked about the Wildcat. At that time they were not sure when it would come over from North Island.

Excellent news! Is it just me or does it appear they have used a ham standard hub fitted with Curtiss Electric type blades?

What exactly does, "the advances in cinematic technology" have to do with restoring and displaying the Wildcat? :-?
Just asking!

This sentence does not make any sense from either a logical or grammatical standpoint so far as I can tell.

Did you watch the news report link? I think he was saying it was a good thing it took this long to get it in there as the time afforded the technology for their new theater to get better before installing it all.

This and a Dauntless will be hanging together outside a 3-D Theater in the hanger area.

If you're ever in San Diego and on the fence about going to the USS Midway Museum, it is a 100% must-see. And the grilled salmon sandwich at Anthony's Fishette walk-up window a short distance away is the best I've ever had. A win-win!

Well said. I'm a San Diego native (moved to Colorado in 2002). I went back a few years ago and made sure to tour the Midway (the Midway was brought in after I moved to Colorado). I'd been on the Yorktown previously. I thought the Midway was a lot better tour.

And Anthony's is a long time family favorite restaurant. When I lived in San Diego I had a boat. We'd often stop at Anthony's for lunch or dinner as they had a dock you tie up at. The restaurant is built out over the water. If you like seafood, it's a must do.

Thanks for the photo. Across the street is the Holiday Inn where many flight crews have stayed over the years. I must admit that, for the longest time, I wouldn't go to Anthony's - it just seemed "too close" to the hotel and a tad touristy. One day I was in a rush and went to the Fishette (the blue awning portion in the photo) and ordered the salmon sandwich. The lady recommended that I try some of their homemade salad dressing on the sandwich. It was heaven; the best sandwich I think I'd ever had. The next time I was in town, I went back simply to prove to myself that the sandwich was a fluke; surely it couldn't be that good again - but it was. Now it's tradition and a must-do in KSAN. The salad dressing is not automatic - be sure to ask for it.

Sorry to hijack the topic slightly, but if you're going to the Midway, you're a short walk from Anthony's ...

Thanks Jesse!
No I didn't watch the TV report but now have. It clears up the quote! The anchorman at the beginning calls it the "Battle of the Midway", so I am wondering what amusement park had a battle with Wildcats!!! :)
