Being former Army myself, I'm reminded of something Dr Atwater at the Ordnance Museum in Aberdeen told me once:
Quote:
What's the only difference between a fairy tale and a solider's story? The first starts with, 'Once upon a time,' and the second starts with, 'This is no sh__...'

Without speculating on the veracity of any of the stories mentioned one of the fascinating things about studying history is how stories come to light years later. While millions of individual experiences are undoubtedly lost to history everyday there are many yet to be discovered in archives, letters and memoirs all over the world from every conflict in history.

Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.
Mark Twain, Following the Equator (1897), ch. 15.
