AAMA receives national award for 5th consecutive year

Receives award for Outstanding Event of 2013 - Starfighter Roll Out
EDMONTON, November 16 2013 - After hosting a great conference and banquet for the Canadian Aeronautical Preservation Association (CAPA), the national body for Canadian Aviation Museums, the Alberta Aviation Museum was surprised to receive its 5th consecutive national award!

The Alberta Aviation Museum was chosen by its peers for the CAPA Award for Outstanding event of 2013 for the "Starfighter Roll Out" this past August.

This was followed with an announcement by the Alberta Aviation Museum Association in conjunction with Edmonton Airports and members of the Villeneuve Owners Association

New Alberta Heritage Museum to be located at Villeneuve

An all new museum, separate and distinct from the Alberta Aviation Museum
Alberta Aviation Museum President Marvin Kowalchuk unveiled plans for the creation of a new aviation museum, Alberta Flying Heritage Museum (AFHM), to be located at Villeneuve Airport in the Greater Edmonton region.
Kowalchuk acknowledged the generous support and assistance of Edmonton Airports, as he explained that the Alberta Flying Heritage Museum will be an all new museum separate and distinct from the current Alberta Aviation Museum. The two museums will complement each other in their collections and operations rather than compete.

The Alberta Flying Heritage Museum will focus on the broad history of Central and Northern Alberta, while the current Alberta Aviation Museum will very specifically focus on the history of Edmonton and Blatchford Field.

The Alberta Flying Heritage Museum will be an active living museum with flying aircraft from Alberta’s history and create a home for active flying events and guest aircraft visits that were part of the Alberta Aviation Museum up to this point.

The Alberta Aviation Museum will become a more traditional static museum focused on exhibits, education and research with an eye to the historical detail of Edmonton’s story.

None of this would be possible without the generous support and encouragement of Edmonton Airports and VP Commercial Development Myron Keehn helping secure a site.

According to Alberta Aviation Museum Executive Director Tom Hinderks the AFHM is looking forward to being a key partner at Villeneuve Airport while creating a new Historic attraction with a living museum experience plus educational and tourism opportunities in Sturgeon County, St. Albert and the surrounding communities.

We also thank Transport Canada/Public Works Canada for their donation of a 26,000 sq ft dismantled building from Edmonton City Centre Airport that will be delivered to the Villeneuve airport site this spring.

This donation coupled with the generous support of Edmonton Airports demonstrates their dedication to preserving our aviation history.

The Alberta Flying Heritage Museum is looking forward to playing an important role in helping develop the Villeneuve Airport into Western Canada's premier General Aviation airport as well as creating this new living museum and attraction.

The aircraft, artifacts and equipment from the AAMA along with these donations are just the start of what it will take to create the Alberta Flying Heritage Museum vision.

We are looking forward to working with the Federal, Provincial and County governments as well as the Public and Corporate Alberta to raise the capital necessary to assemble the donated building and provide the other necessities required to bring this facility to life as quickly as possible for the benefit of the region.

Museums that complement each other can be a good thing. There are two distinctly different aviation museums at Meacham Field in Fort Worth. VFM is mainly themed at Korea and earlier, while the Veterans Memorial Airpark / FAC / OV10 Bronco Ass'n combined collection focuses on Cold War, Viet Nam, and modern era aviation. There's little crossover between the two organizations. (Yes, Special Kay is the exception)
