There is a procedure in the B-17 maintenance manual for rope starting that uses a section of rope with canvas pockets that go over the prop blade tips. Tie the other end to a jeep and go!
I've seen pictures of people rope starting a DC-3 by wrapping the rope around the prop dome and driving off.
I guess whatever works!

I have also seen a DC-3 started that way too.

I doubt that spinner is designed for that kind of load.

What load are you talking about being exerted on the spinner?

Me too.

It definitely worked, we got home OK. The gentleman wrapping the rope around the spinner told that during WWII the RAAF had a drastic shortage of batteries, although they probably used a Jeep instead of a Falcon Ute.
