The photo I have is probably the same one you have zorro9. It's pretty clear that the number was altered. Just another one of those pesky little F4U mysteries that may never be solved.

F4U-4 Folks/Rob:

Yes that is indeed what happened with the rest of the fuselage numbers. The R/gear speed brake assy was just sprayed over the number "15". Why the switch at the very last minute?? not even the ferry pilot noticed it. It was a well performed trick not the mistake fm a painter as previously mentioned.
